Land of the Book of Mormon
Where are the features we can find from reading the Book of Mormon? The features described include such items as wilderness areas, the land of Nephi being an island (2 Nephi 10:20), a narrow neck of land that can be walked in a day located at the top of that island (Helaman 4:5-8), with a sea on both the west and east of it, a distance from that narrow neck of land to the city of Nephi being about 100 miles south, give or take 20 miles, as it is described as being within a day of 10 walking days for a group of 450 men, women and children walking with Alma in a wilderness area, all that being described as in the land of Nephi. (Mosiah 23:1-5).
We are also told that there are two separate lands, the land of Nephi and the land of Zarahemla, with both of those separate lands being nearly surrounded by water (Alma 22:27-33). We are also told that they are somehow connected by that narrow neck of land above. The city Bountiful (Hel. 4:5-7) is described as being located in that narrow neck of land, occupying all the land area from the east sea to the west sea. The city Bountiful's north border runs to the city Desolation's south boarder, which is just north of that narrow neck of land. At the point where those two cities border each other, the land of Nephi and the land of Zarahemla are somehow both south of that city named Desolation, with the city of Zarahemla also about 100 miles, give or take 20 miles, from that narrow neck of land. This distance is found by the walking distance of Alma's people as they walked form near the city of Nephi to Zarahemla in 21 walking days. At least 9 of those days were on the isle or in the land of Nephi. (Mosiah 23:3;24:20-25)
The land of Zarahemla is described as having a river Sidon located just east of the city of Zarahemla and east of the city Manti. Manti is south of Zarahemla, indicating a north-south running river Sidon that empties into the sea. There are cities bordering an east sea within a day or two walking distance from Zarahemla (Alma 50:7-15;51:21-32)
The city Antionum is east of Zarahemla (Alma 31:3), borders the east sea coast in the land of Zarahemla and is the most southern of the several cities along that eastern sea coast. Just north of Antionum are the cites of Jershon, Moroni, Lehi, Morianton, Omer, Gid, Mulek, all located along that eastern sea shore going north in that order. (Alma 51:22-28). Mulek is so far north along that eastern sea shore that it comes close to the city Bountiful, with some mentioned plains separating the two cities (Alma52:20). The description of the cities along this eastern sea coast going all the way north to the narrow neck of land would indicate, then , that the western sea coast in the land of Nephi and the eastern sea coast in the land of Zarahemla share the same body of water, as they are joined at the top by the plains from Bountiful to Mulek, with Bountiful occupying the narrow neck of land at the top of the land of Nephi.
Along with these features, there are also the mention of various hills and wilderness areas in relationship to the various seas and cities, with all this fitting within the walking distances mentioned in the narrative. All this is also within a reasonable walking distance, perhaps something between at least 20 but not more than 60 days for a group of 42 men (Mosiah 8:2-11), from the narrow neck of land to the hill called Cumorah, where the final battle between the Lamanites and the Nephites took place. Cumorah also is located in a land of many waters, rivers and fountains. Near Cumorah is a body of water named Ripliancum by the Jaredites, which means "large, to exceed all."
Above is a map of the geography and locations of 24+ cities plus hills, narrow neck of land and seas as mentioned from just the above verses from the Book of Mormon
Overview of the land of the Book of Mormon. The land southward is below the Fall Line and is "nearly surround by water" (Alma 22:32). The land northward contains the land of Cumorah, found in a land of many waters, rivers and fountains and near Ripliancum.
